A custom reported in several locations but surviving only at *Knutsford, Cheshire, is the decoration of pavements with coloured sand on special occasions such as * May Day and for local * weddings. At Knuts-ford, the sand is dispensed through a funnel, and it is said that it is better when it rains because the colour thus lives on for a while in the paving stones. Henderson (1879: 40-1) also mentions sand strewing for weddings in 19th-century Newcastle.
